SONG FA Bak Kut Teh Jakarta

If having Bak kut teh is always included in your food itinerary whenever you visit Singapore, be super happy then as Song Fa, one of the most popular bak kut teh in Singapore has open their first branch in Jakarta! I personally was beyond excited to find the good news. Though my personal favorite in Spore is not Song Fa, but I tasted theirs (read here) and it was good.
People who often come to PIK might notice a new building is under development, located beside Shell and across PIK hospital. That building is the coming soon Ozone Mall, the place would host supermarkets and restaurants. A little birdie told me one of the tenants could possibly be Chung Gi Wa (yay hopefully true!).

First of all, I love the location. They have the outdoor terrace, and though the view of hospital is not really something we fond of, it's a good seating when the weather is friendly. The indoor itself is pretty nice. Quite spacious with a touch of Chinese. I didn't have the chance to take a picture as the crowds were massive. It's really amazing how fast people cope with new diners.

Bak kut teh or known as pork ribs soup is a popular meal in Spore, commonly there are two types of bak kut teh. Both use pork, the difference is on the soup. One is light color with use of garlic and pepper to enhance the flavor, while the other one is darker color from the use of medicine herbs to add stronger flavor. I personally of course prefer the light color peppery soup, and Song Fa's soup happens to be the one I like.

The star, Pork ribs soup comes in two sizes, regular and large. In my opinion, the price was quite steep. Regular one is 68k, large one is 88k. My regular bowl comes with two pcs of pork ribs. Standard size, not too big, way too small bowl to accommodate the soup. But thankfully just like the one in Spore, we can ask for soup refill as frequent as we want. The positive side, what a perfect ribs. Juicy and tender meat. The not so good side, I feel the soup was lack of pepper so the flavor wasn't strong enough, and it was served warm, not hot. One of the key of a good soup is it has to be served hot. I noticed the table next to mine complaining to the waiter on the cold soup as well.

I also had their Pork kidney soup (40k). Pork kidney is one of my favorite when it comes to pork intestine, but I hardly had it finished as I don't like how they cooked it. It's a bit tricky to cook a kidney, you really need to be careful on getting rid of the strong smell. I'm not sure if they meant to cook it like that, but aside from the strong smells, mine still have blood on the soup and it instantly turn my appetite off.

Despite some of the flaws, their first branch in Jakarta still very much a happy news. It's not the best bak kut teh I ever have, but for now, they probably serve the best one in entire town.
