Hotel Reviews: Aston Primera Pasteur Hotel Bandung

I haven't been to many cities in Indonesia. To date, I have only been to Medan, Yogyakarta, Bali and Bandung. I would really want to go to Surabaya for the food and Raja Ampat for the insanely beautiful beach though. One day, soon. Anyway, having to distance only 3 hours drive from Jakarta, Bandung is a place I visit quite often for a short trip. 

The Royal Stag Bistro Bandung

If you are into British culture, The Royal Stag Bistro in Bandung would impress you. It's located hidden from the main street but once you turn into the alley, you will spot the place immediately. It's a big house turn into a classy restaurant. I absolutely adore the whole black and white color.From outside, it looks like a big classic ranch. 

Gan Bei Kitchen Bandung

Gan Bei probably the most interesting spot I went in Bandung so far. The design concept is almost flawless. I love love love how they make the place so Asian with mixture of Japanese influence. It's a huge house turned into a cozy dining. No signage in front which easily mislead you to pass by them.

Two Hands Full Bandung

You know how in life there are times when you just have that absolute certain feeling about some things? Our first try out at Two Hands Full definitely give me that sort of feeling. Even it was just a short visit, I am confident enough to say they serve a great brunch!

90 Gourmet

We were supposed to go to The Windchime for our lunch, but turns out they only open from 11am - 2pm for lunch and by the time we found out it was almost 2pm and we were still far from the area. Too bad as I really wanted to try that place. With a pinch of disappointment, I started to think of other options for lunch and I remembered the last time I went to Bandung, I passed by 90 Gourmet on our way to D'Palm. 

When we walked in, how the place looked was beyond my expectation. It was gorgeous! The place was huge, very huge where the smoking and non smoking section was separated very far with an empty yard as the separator. They also have patio in the upper floor where 3 zones (smoking, non smoking and patio) came with 3 different kinds of design. It was lovely. They had this big electric candle put inside some sort of bird cage as substitute for actual lighting at the non smoking section. While the smoking section was as beautiful as the non smoking one, designed to look like terrace with this bright yellow and orange color dominated. The patio itself was smaller as it only occupied about a quarter of upper floor, designed more in a modern wooden way. Very nice.

90 Gourmet was a combination of two restaurants, Azuma which served Japanese and Orange Blossom who served International selections from pasta, light meal and desserts. The patio itself have their own personal menu too, western food. However, there were no benchmark of where we must sit as all the menu from each restaurants will be shown to us. 

After wandering around admiring the nicely done concept, we began to order. Well, I was the one who wandering around, my husband couldn't care less :). These what we order from Azuma's menu, Horenzo salad (36k), Spicy salmon gunkan (24k), Crispy salmon maki (28k), Spicy salmon head fried (45k), and Unagi donburi (110k). We chose Caramello banana (24k), caramelized banana crepes topped with ice cream and chocolate from Orange Blossom as our dessert.

 

To us the sushi and donburi were so so and overpriced, but we loveeee the Caramello banana. It was delicious! The banana was sweet and soft dipped in caramel sauce and the crunchy crepes makes it a perfect dessert. I will definitely be back to try Orange Blossom and the patio's menu. Very recommended!

Hummingbird Eatery

I have been curious about this place since I saw their web quite some time ago, so last weekend when hubby and I went to Bandung, I was very excited. It was an impromptu trip, we headed Bandung around 6pm and reached there almost 9pm and went straight to hotel. After checked in, I called Hummingbird to make sure whether they still open, luckily their last order was at 11.30pm. Another luck was our hotel, Novotel located not too far from Progo street where Hummingbird was.

As we had Chinese for breakfast and western for brunch, we decided to go for Indonesian for our lunch, Sundanese to be exact. The two Sundanese restaurants I ever tried in Bandung, Bumbu Desa (at that time, they have not open at Jakarta) and Sari Sunda were both satisfying. I was hoping this recently opened Sundanese restaurant named d'palm would be satisfying too. 

Unlike mostly Sundanese restaurant, this one was designed modern. The place was quite big with indoor and outdoor spot. I loved how they decorated the outdoor. It was designed like garden with fish pond and eight Saung (gazebo). The saung was also designed with modern touch. Too bad all the saungs were full, so we sat inside and start to order. 

We ordered Gurame goreng kipas (60.5k), Ati ampela goreng (9k), Ayam bakar (16k), Jambal roti goreng (7k), Pete bakar (10.5k), Sop buntut asam pedas (39k), Lidah goreng (16.5k), Babat goreng (14.5) and Es kelapa (15.5k). Overall, it was a pleasant lunch. Bandung was really a place to eat Sundanese food. =)

Maja House

From Poka Tiam, we went to Maja house. Maja house was an outlet located uphill with 2 restaurants in the same management, Maja Suki and Sugar & Cream. Maja Suki served shabu - shabu while Sugar & Cream was a rooftop restaurant served International food. 

We chose Sugar & Cream as we were only heading for beverages and light meals. Sugar & Cream had this open air spot with comfy beds where you can directly see the view of Bandung. The beds were meant for people to lay down comfortably while hanging out with friends, too bad that the beds were all quite dirty so personally, we only sat there without laying down.

We chose Apple Mojito (35k), Bajigur and Fried calamari (25.5k). My mojito was very good, it had chunks of green apples and the mint leaves was very refreshing. One of the best mocktails I had in years. The fried calamari was also satisfying. The Bajigur could be better if it was served hot, so make sure to let the waiter know when you order. 

Maja was definitely a good place for hang out with friends and family. If you intend to come at night, make sure to do reservations first especially on weekend as they are often booked for private party.

Mie Dorokdok + Poka Tiam

Last Sunday, me and my hubby went to Bandung. It was an impromptu trip so just the two of us. We reached there around 9am something and went straight to Pasir Kaliki. I read in one of food blogger's blog about a street vendor that sells noodle which she loved, so we headed there to give it a try. The vendor was located at the front of Poka Tiam, a Singaporean kopi tiam. We decided to order 1 bowl first incase it wasn't good. The noodle was called Mie Dorokdok (13k). We can choose dry or wet, served with meatballs, beef tripe and tendon topped with cowhide crackers. It wasn't bad but very standard noodles, the difference was only at the crunchy crackers. 

After that, we went in to Poka Tiam and ordered Fried pork kwetiau (25k), Fried samcan with chilli salt (32k), Siewmay (16,8k), Ice barley (8,8) and Soya milk (8,8k). The kwetiau came in a very oily presentation, and I didn't see any pork, they just put pork sausages inside and small chopped of char siu . It was indeed oily and wasn't good at all, tasteless and unseasoned. The siewmay was like those frozen siewmay which you can find in supermarket. The fried samcan was quite ok but definitely not good enough to make me want to come back. Luckily there was 25% discount using certain credit card to at least make me felt better about the unfavorable breakfast.
