Tin Pan Alley

Me and my friend went to Tin Pan Alley on Saturday afternoon. It was around 2pm when we reached there. As it was located in office building and was not in lunch time, no wonder the place was empty. Only had 3 tables filled beside ours. Like the name, the restaurant it self did located and designed like an alley.

We just ate Rujak Kolam at ITC so we were kinda full and skipped the appetizers. I chose Mushroom stuffed chicken breast (69k) for my late lunch. The sauce was supposed to be cream cheese, but as I didn't eat cheese, I asked the waiter to change to mushroom sauce. It was good. It was fried chicken breast stuffed with mixed vegetables and chopped mushrooms, accompanied with mashed potatoes and steam beans and carrots.

My friend chose Grandma's Fried Chicken (75k), breaded chicken fillet topped with mushroom sauce and accompanied with mashed potatoes and steam vegetables. It was also good. The beverages, classic and strawberry lemonade was refreshing.

They have a 50% promotion on food using particular credit card that my friend happen to have. Yay! So it was a good lunch with a good 50% deal. =)

Rujak Kolam

I am not a fan of Rujak, the only rujak that I liked was the one near my house as the seller didn't crunch the peanuts into small pieces, they left the peanuts in big chunks and condensed, not as watery as most Rujak's. This Rujak Kolam had become my second favorite Rujak. I found this place accidentally when I was doing my shopping at ITC. It was very crowded, many people were queuing and I was curious.

It was as delicious as the one sold near my house. Same like that, the peanuts was also crunch in big chunks and not watery. It was quite expensive for a plate of Rujak (25k), but very worth it.

Bangkok Jam

My family and I went to Emporium mall to grab something to eat. My mom said that she wanted to try Pancious as it was recently opened there. When we reached there, the place were crowded and we were told there were 8 groups before we can get our table, so we decided to eat somewhere else. I remember I saw my friend status' at her BBM about Bangkok Jam, so I asked my family to dine there. It was Thursday night, and even it was not as crowded as Pancious, but the place was also kind of full.

I like the interior, it was all white with touch of black. Minimalist classic. Here was what we ordered:

Thai fish cake (32.5k) - directly become the unfavorable dish for the night.

Chicken deep fried in pandanus leaves (29.5k) - We were surprised when the chicken came as it was so small and only 5 pcs, luckily there were 5 of us only. It was so so.. Regular fried boneless chicken.

The next dish came to table was Sapo soya bean curd with vegetables (38.5k). Another surprise on how small the portion was. Sigh... It was tasteless, the tofu was not like soft japanese tofu that mostly founded in sapo.

When the Seafood in red Tom Yam (42.5k) came, again we were surprised of how small was the portion. I even double confirmed to the waiter whether it was large size one, as it came with options of small or large bowl and we chose large one. I wonder how tiny will it be for the small bowl. The large portion was more like for 2 - 3 people to share, as there were 5 of us, we only get to taste 3 soup spoon each. How sad. Anyway, the soup was more like sayur asem rather than tom yam and only have 3 shrimps, 2 squids and chunks of mushrooms (yes, I memorized it to show how sad the soup was).Too bad I forgot to took the pic.

The only dish we liked that night was the Gurami topped with fiery chilli and pinneaple sauce (15k/ounce). We ordered 7 ounces so it was enough to share among us. The sauce was nice.

Our rice had long gone before the Mixed fried vegetables w/ garlic sauce (29.5k) came. It took around 15 minutes after we finished the last dish for the vegetables to finally delivered. And funny thing our appetizer of spicy papaya salad w/ soft shell crab (29.5k turns out to be dessert as it came the latest.

The restaurant had been opened for around 2 months, but surely the service need to be improved. The rice was putted in a rattan basket, and my husband was plating it into each of our plates. After he finished plating it in the last plate, the rice left in the basket was still enough for 1 portion and the waiter just directly took it away without asking... She walked so fast that I even had to shouted to ask her to just put the basket in the table and not took it away first. I saw the table beside ours was angrily speaking to the restaurant manager that it took so long for their orders to be served. I guess 2 months opening was not enough for them to polish the service.

Mango Tree

While waiting for our flight back to Jakarta, we spotted this restaurant while we were walking to the gate. It was not big but crowded. We decided to have our dinner here. The menu book came with many choices, as I have not yet try Tom Yam Goong during my trip, I directly chose that to be my main course. Besides Tom Yam Goong (260 bath), my husband ordered Gaeng Phed Ped Yang (290 bath), it was red curry with roast duck. For the appetizer, we tried Gai Thod Nam Pla (210 bath), a plate of boneless deep fried chicken in fish sauce.

I loved the Tom Yam Goong, it had generous amount of shrimp and mushroom and the tom yam taste was just superb. The duck curry was not good, the smell of the curry was too strong for both of us even though the duck meat was very tender. As for our appetizer, it was just so so... What can you expect from a boneless deep fried chicken anyway?

Sriayudhya Seafood Market

My husband and I went for a short trip to Bangkok recently. It was a business trip so we didn't have many chances to do food hunting. =(
One night, a friend of my husband told us that we must try this popular seafood named Somboon Seafood. As he said that it was not far from the hotel we stayed in, we took Tuk Tuk there. The Tuk Tuk driver claimed to know the place, but after a 5 minutes ride, he took us to different seafood place. He finally admit he didn't know where Somboon was. Sigh! As we were starving, so we went along to the one this Tuk Tuk driver took us, that he claimed to be the best seafood in town.

The place was empty when we came, it was a big restaurant and there were only 2 tables filled. There was a section where we can chose the seafood directly. We ordered Steam blood clam, grilled BBQ squid, chilli lemon fish ponfret, BBQ prawn and a plate of mixed vegetables. They were all delicious! The clams were big, not small ones like we mostly had in Jakarta's seafood place. The squid was grilled perfectly, the fish ponfret's broth was tasty, very refreshing with sour and sweet taste. They gave us chilli garlic with lemon for the dipping sauce, it was perfect but quite expensive. I cannot recall the individual price, but the total bill was 3067 bath, around IDR 920,000. It was worth it.
